No beer, no geeks, no internet.
Haas Schleifmaschinen: Central Internet on/off switch?
What kind of people are these, these network engineers who keep the Internet running? Andrian Kreye, head of the Süddeutsche Feuilleton, wanted to know this from the architecture critic Andrew Blum, who spent two years researching the places where you can see the Internet, for example in the form of huge cable harnesses. In this interview, which is not only worth reading for geeks and nerds, Blum comes to the conclusion that the Internet "in reality only works because two guys in Texas drank a beer together". You can read the whole interview about backbones, server farms and the like in full length in Andrian Kreye's blog. Andrew Blum also spoke on this topic at a TED conference.

Leo suggests the following translations:
nerd (Slang): highly intelligent, but contact poor person, Fachidiot, boring, imbecile, nerd, nerd, nerd.
geek (Slang): Computer freak, nerd, nerd corpse, couch potato.
dork (Slang): Dork, idiot.
But no matter what the Internet network engineers call themselves now, people are doing a pretty good job, and if you meet one, buy him a beer!
See you next time. Grind well!
