Grinding 35,000 years ago - and today

Haas Schleifmaschinen: Solved the riddle - happy winner Bastian Götz - framed by Sema Uyanik and Robin Peter, who both complete their training at Haas Schleifmaschinen.

The "Jobs for Future" applicant fair took place in Villingen-Schwenningen in mid-March. As in the previous year, Haas Schleifmaschinen was there again, and we were pleased to welcome many interested young people.

This year we also had something to win, provided you knew how old the oldest ground tool in the world is. The right answer came from Bastian Götz from Rottweil: 35,000 years! The 17-year-old student from the Leibniz-Gymnasium in Rottweil can now look forward to an iPhone 5.
Happy birthday! By the way, Bastian Götz is also the managing director of a student company that he founded with fellow students at the suggestion of his economics teacher. Someone says that today's youth would be without drive!

By the way, we ourselves were amazed at how old the art of grinding is. This was discovered by the archaeologist Bruno David from Monash University, who and his team discovered an axe fragment made of volcanic stone in a cave in northern Australia. Here's an article in Spektrum der Wissenschaft online.

Grinding in the 21st century

What a pity that we hardly know anything about the grinding process 35,000 years ago. It is assumed that the Aborigines used sandstone as a grinding tool. What we at Haas Schleifmaschinen know exactly, however, is what a good grinding process should look like today.

For example, for cutting tools such as this beautiful shaped cutting plate, which makes high demands on the grinding machine with its complex geometries. There are cutting surfaces, extremely flat clearance angles, high-precision edges between differently inclined surfaces, an extremely sharp cutting edge and, of course, beautiful homogeneous chip faces.

On a Multigrind® AF or Multigrind® CA a beautiful precision tool can be ground in one clamping. The grinding program for this is provided by our grinding software Multigrind® Horizon, which has just been reported on in the trade journal fertigung.

So much for today: Grinding with attitude!
