Rotor

  • Rotor
  • Rotor

A rotor is the rotating part of a machine and/or in a unit. The term rotor is used especially if there is also a stator. The term has different meaning in the electro-technical and aerodynamic sectors. In electrotechnology, the entire rotating part of a machine is known as the rotor. In this context, it is also common to talk of types of rotor (e.g. a squirrel cage rotor). Depending on its design, a rotor may also be described as an armature, drum armature, inductor or pulse wheel. In the context of linear motors, only the term rotor is used. In an aerodynamic context, the term rotor describes the hub, rotor blades and rotating axis in their entirety.
