Hard metal

  • Hard metal

Hard metals are metal matrix composites. Here, the hard materials, which are present as small particles, are held together by a matrix of metal. This makes hard metals somewhat less hard than pure hard materials, but much tougher. Hard metals are mainly used as cutting materials for tools. Good examples are turning tools, drills and milling tools. In addition, hard metals are also popular for wear-resistant dies, such as those used in forming or punching tools. Since carbides have a high temperature resistance, very high cutting speeds are possible with them.
