Sandwich clamping solves sausage bagel problem
The sausage bagel problem
You know the problem. You order a sausage sandwich with cucumbers and mustard. You take the first bite, and the contents fall on your shirt. Why? Because you always either put too much or too little pressure on the sandwich. This is a classic clamping issue. But what does that have to do with the clamping for turbine blades made of titanium? Well, the sausage bagel problem, as we refer to it, inspired us to devise the world’s one and only “Haas sandwich clamp”.
Haas Schleifmaschinen: Sandwich clamp.
The sandwich clamp
Using this half-shell clamp, turbine blades can be machined in a clamping. Expensive bismuth brackets and costly melting down and melting off are thus a thing of the past. The entire sandwich clamp is stored in the aerospace module of our Multigrind® Horizon grinding software as a 3D model. All grinding paths can be driven virtually and modified if necessary. The whole clamping, including the workpiece, can be turned virtually using the robot, and the entire grinding process can be simulated.

Documented grinding process
During the grinding the machine receives continuous feedback from the integrated measuring system and readjusts itself. The entire grinding process is logged and documented without interruption. This a real plus when it comes to producing so-called “flying parts” that are installed in airplanes. These components are tested based on European (EN 9100), US American (SAE AS 9100/9110/9120) and other international norms. Not only are the product conformity and quality subject to these tests, but also the manufacturing process and its continous documentation. Our grinding software Multigrind® Horizon allows precise definition and documentation of the the manufacturing process. This ensures that critical parameters cannot be changed. During the programming process the software logs every button that has been pressed, so that the required documentation is a natural by-product of the actual production process.
If you would like to know more about the Haas sandwich clamp and the bagel problem then visit us in Hanover at the EMO. You will find us in hall 6, stand E28. You can’t make it? No problem, we’ll send you more information by mail. Just send me a short note.
Have a great day!
