Grinding on the high seas

Haas Schleifmaschinen: HMS warrior | Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

A few days ago we were wondering what this wheel was all about. As correctly explained in a comment, it’s a wall-mounted wet grinding wheel on a ship. The ship in question is the HMS Warrior, which was launched in London in 1860 and completed in 1861. At that time, the Warrior warship was the pride and joy of the Royal Navy, as it featured 4.5-inch-thick plating, making it practically indestructible. Propelled by a two-cylinder steam engine, the ship required so much coal that it also had to be equipped with full rigging. Advances in technology made the Warrior obsolete in just ten years and it was retired. The attractive grinding wheel had therefore served its time. Along with the HMS Victory, the Warrior can be viewed at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and it’s well worth a visit!

Incidentally, you can rest assured that a Haas Multigrind® grinding machine is far from obsolete after just ten years.

On that note, keep grinding with attitude!
